How our wedding ceremony would look if we didn’t have veto power

Thursday, July 28th, 2011

Or “How I Spent my Lunch Break.”

Also, SPOILER ALERT if you haven’t read the sixth Harry Potter book. Proceed.

(I think this would be an appropriate time to note that Webster’s Dictionary defines “Brandish” as “To wave or flourish menacingly.”)

Veto power or not, I wish Dumbledore could be our officiant. Too bad he’s dead and also fictional.

Five reasons forts are awesome.

Saturday, July 16th, 2011

I spent a lot of my childhood building forts in the woods and in the backyard… mostly out of sticks and branches, but occasionally Mom would give us the OK to build an indoor fort out of sheets, blankets and couch cushions. Here are five reasons indoor forts are awesome.

1. They are magical. There is no reason that stretching sheets and blankets between a table and some chairs should provide for a particularly pleasant experience. But it does. There is no other reason for this other than a secret inherent “fort magic” that science can provide no explanation for. (Although, studies show that fairy lights are correlated with high quantities of fort magic.)

2. They can be totally fancy! Designer forts? Yes, please!

3. The fun-itude of any activity (reading, writing, laughing, watching movies, eating ice cream, etc.) is multiplied by a factor of 85 when enjoyed in a fort or fort-like setting.

4. There is no room for negativity in a fort. No worries or real-life problems. Leave your troubles at the door. Or flap-type entrance.

5. The snuggliness of it all. You know you love it. Don’t even lie.

Hope you enjoyed my little ode to forts. Now go build one!

At 15,000 feet with my iPhone

Oh hello!

Saturday, June 4th, 2011

Making it in just under the wire today… I will not break my goal of posting every day in June!!

Today Chris and I went to Raleigh and scouted out a great location for a shoot next weekend, and enjoyed a crawfish boil with a lovely group of people. If you haven’t had crawfish, you are seriously missing out! I now want it all the time.

Like for every meal.

I have a vocal audition this week. I’m quite nervous. But it’ll be good to be out of my comfort zone. We’ll see how this pans out.

Also, I miss this place. A lot.

Assorted random thoughts brought to you by the numbers 11 and 57, and the letters P and M.

Our trip to the woods

Thursday, April 28th, 2011

Living in Greensboro has perks. One of these perks is that it’s more proximal to the mountains than Raleigh. Plus we have a mini-mountain that’s even closer. So you can get our hiking/climbing/outdoorsy fix pretty easily.

So Chris and I (and our puppy, Mouse, who you’ll meet shortly) ventured to Pilot Mountain last weekend for some outdoorsy fun. It was ultra foggy and ultra springtimey. Ultra perfect.

I swear I didn’t even touch these photos. So. Much. Green. I love this time of year. And chlorophyll.

See what I mean about the fog? Also, meet Mouse!! The cutest half-bat, half-bunny rabbit, half-German Shepherd around.

We’re getting married, yay!

My newest obsession

Pinterest. So much pretty in one place, I might just die.

It’s a fantastic site to catalog your favorite products, photos, visual inspiration, etc. And it helps you keep track of the source. I’m one to drag eight thousand photos to my desktop and forget where they came from– and this solves that problem (and de-clutters my desktop)!

Five minutes on Pinterest and I feel totally inspired and rejuvenated! LOVE. IT.

It’s currently by invitation only– you can request an invite from Pinterest, but I have five to share, so just comment if you want one!

(Footnote: I was just reminded of this quote… from a classic. “I know you can be overwhelmed, and you can be underwhelmed, but can you just be… whelmed?”)

Mood Boards

Tuesday, April 5th, 2011

There’s a sweet and delicate balance of being a bride and starting a wedding photography business. Trying to find my niche in the wedding industry + trying to figure out what my fiance and I want for our own wedding! It’s kind of overwhelming and kind of lovely. Granted, Chris and I won’t be tying the knot till 2012, but sometimes I forget that I’m going to be a bride, too! It’s all a whirlwind of lenses and lace and love.

Today I got to have a little bit of fun on the “I’m a bride!” side on BHLDN. Their Mood Boards launched last week, and it’s so… therapeutic to be able to arrange and combine so much prettiness! Le sigh… (also, I SO want that ‘Oui’ ring below!)

Off to read more of Jose Villa’s new book! Yippee!

I know I just shared some inspiration yesterday, but these few lovely things fell into my lap this week, and I couldn’t help but share them.

This first article on The Vagabond Bond features one of my favorite photography teams, Sarah & Chris Rhoads, and their incorporation of travel in their jobs. I would love to get to a point in my career when I can do things like this.

This next video project is by another favorite photographer, Jasmine Star. If you know me, you know I LOVE me some visual storytelling, so this piece about crafting and telling your own story was really beautiful to me! Watch it on her blog here. You won’t be sorry. Fo sho.

This print is so awesome that I can hardly stand it. Doesn’t it make you want to sever yourself from technology and go DO something? The Etsy shop Aardvark on Sea is full of great stuff like this. Go look at it!

Well, hello again!

Monday, February 21st, 2011

It’s been a while! But I’m back in gear, committed to daily updating a consistent blog! Hooray!

Since I last updated, much has happened. For starters, Chris and I got engaged! We’re unbelievably happy and super excited to start a life together. It’ll be fun, too, to focus my business more on weddings as I start to plan my own! Yay for being a bride AND a wedding photog! So you’ll see some fun and pretty wedding things I find on the interwebs, too.

For now, my goal is to SHOOT. MORE. I haven’t picked up my camera much in the past two months, just because I have been so busy. But I’ve been so inspired by my photographer friends to get serious about shooting, booking and MOVING FORWARD! So there’s exciting things to come.

Stay tuned for some pretty Iris Multimedia inspiration boards tomorrow morning, and then later this week, some photos and blog love!!
